Novaled cooperates with Marcus Tremonto on develop-ment of PAD, a new transparent OLED suspension light

New York artist and designer Marcus Tremonto, in cooperation with Novaled AG, a company specializing in OLED technologies and materials, has designed PAD, a new transparent OLED suspension light. PAD is the result of a year long collaboration between Novled and Marcus Tremonto. This ultra slim light, which was conceived and developed by Tremonto entirely from an organic perspective, will be exhibited from April 15th to 20th at the 2012 Frankfurt Light+Building trade show.

Based on the pad-like fingers of the red-eyed tree frog, PAD uses transparent OLED panels to create three types of illumination. The first two types occur when the PAD light is switched on, during which the bottom of the lamp gives off a rich white light, while the top emits ambient light in a variety of colors. The initial series of colors, red, yellow and blue, were chosen in honor of the Bauhaus school of design. The third type of illumination occurs when PAD is switched off, during which ambient light surrounding the lamp will pass through its transparent OLED panels, creating colored shadows similar to the effect of light passing through stained glass. The OLED panels are also partially transparent when PAD is switched on, creating a combination of light and technology that highlights the unique design potential of transparent OLED light sources.

PAD also represents an expandable idea of form which illustrates the beauty and innovative principles of transparent OLED lighting technology. PAD light can be modified, depending on

the purpose and requirements of the lighting installation, to create larger area lighting designs that reflect the unique potential of transparent OLED panels.

“In our work, we primarily concentrate on using light as a material, which I firmly believe is the future of lighting design,” said Marcus Tremonto. “Because they are thin, large area light sources, OLEDs are at the forefront of this future. By using transparent OLED panels in PAD, we showed this light source for what it truly is, a magical experience which takes full advantage of the unique design properties of OLEDs to create a work of art and light.”

As you move through the assemblage of hanging cubes you experience a snapshot of a perfect cube in motion, sizes changing as the eye works its way around them.

Based on a childhood construction by the artist of a mass of Hexahedron cubes, paying homage to his love of structure and architecture, Hexalights is an expansion to the group of work designed for MOSS gallery in 2010 which explored cartoon imagery through shape and graphics. This collection employs new printing techniques using color that applied to light transform flat (only 1.5mm thin) imagery

into 3-D illusions.

Sizes in this first series range from 15cm to 38cm

We were honored to be approached by Nike to customize a pair of their incredible Zoom Force-1 snow boots. The aim: to show and explore our vision of the future of sports.

Our approach, in envisioning snowboarding in the year 2220, was to take references from Gundam, sci-fi and James Bond.

Each boot was hand made by the artist in our New York studio: unitizing electroluminescent paper and custom graphics..each are unique examples.

Marcus Tremonto will show a new series of Augmented Reality “Lightworks”, in conjunction with daqri, for the first time during the London Frieze Art Fair 2011, SUPER DESIGN exhibition at The Dairy (7a Wakefield Place) for London based gallery Patrick Brillet Fine Arts. Tremonto, known for his work in electroluminescent light, exploring Illusion, spacial issues and the relation between 2D and 3D imagery, further pushes these boundaries that are a constant through out his work, dating back to the works for Phillips De Pury & Company in 2007.

“AR-Lights” are a revealing new Design and Art context, that step towards the future of interactive imagery, virtual spaces, and augmented reality educational tools. These new “AR-Lights”,which include floor, wall mounted and hanging doubled sided versions, create an augmented series of images, that are intractable by the user via smart phones such as an iPhone or Android devise, as well as projections via webcam. The user will be able to interact with the lights up to 4 meters away.

When scanned, you will be able to spin, expand, shrink and twist the images in real time, as well as move around them, while the images stay static, in this virtual “augmented” space.

Additionally shown, will be two large unique “Hexalights” (The series was first shown at Salone del Mobile in Milan this year, which are flat 2mm thin cube-like shapes, that appear to be three dimensional, and change as you move around them). These limited edition Hexalights, will have newly designed shaped QR codes that will allow the viewer to see an “Augmented Reality” installation of Hexalights that will be fully inter-actable.

The creation of this new virtual work, is furthermore a template that allows the studio to constantly change, modify and upload additional designs and experiences, without altering the pieces themselves. It is an exciting ongoing example of the interaction with an art and design object…bringing together the visual illusions that run through all of Marcus Tremontoʼs works, with a now virtual interaction by the user.

When designing a piece out of Carbon Fiber, I decided to celebrate and utilize the best of the materials true physical properties, its strength and lightness. The complexity of curves and required thinness could not be duplicated in any other material while still maintaining its ability to support itself completely…

We are working on another monumental hanging light and a table, again keeping in mind these same properties to achieve illusions in form and weight.

Marcus Tremonto will show new work ‘Luce Magnetica” during the Salone del Mobile 2012 at the renowned Milan gallery Spazio Rossana Orlandi. In his fourth year showing with the gallery, ‘Luce Magnetica’ has a much more connected symbolism to Orlandi than previous exhibited work. On the last day of the Salone 201, after having lunch in the garden with Rossana and talking about the year ahead, responding to the perfect sunny day, an upside down flower pot full of flowers as a concept for the restaurant is what pen to paper resulted…the idea evolved into Luce Magnetica, which continues the ongoing use of cartoon and graphic illustration in his work, as well as using light and illusion as the medium and motivation.

The lamp is an endlessly adaptable form that is changed or ‘arranged’ by use of imbedded and moveable magnets. The silhouette of a pot/shade is the support for the interchangeable double sided electroluminescent flower forms that can be arranged in any pattern and as many as desired, the literal and figurative use of “arrangement” allows for a translation to a tradition from technology.

Are You Positive Installation by Marcus Tremonto

Continuing our exploration into implementing illusion through the use of technology and pop culture reference Are You Positive installation consists of 8 Pixel Bulb lamps and one large lamp that is the negative image cut from the material, this lamp is called Are You Positive.

Working from a 2D imagery and turning the idea into a 3D world, Are Your Positive considers the part that is removed from the design as integral as the final form, the void shape becoming the focal aspect of the lamp.

Shown for the first time durning the Salone del Mobile 2010 at Spazio Rossana Orlandi the installation will be on view as part of the exhibition “Connectors”, at Saatchi Gallery, in conjunction with Phillips De Pury, in London from June 2nd.

New Work by Marcus Tremonto for MOSS NY “Make Me” exhibition

Continuing the use of light as the medium to express the form, the new works exclusively for Moss push further illusion through the relation of manipulating 2D and 3D imaging. The work is illustration based in origin, with inspiration from French Pop comics of the 60’s, which so well delineated what was necessary to translate the image; the suggestion of a solid form through simple line gesture. By manipulating and exaggerating size and form, the work forces the viewer to re-examine, question and consider the surroundings in which it exists as part of the piece, much like a cell in a comic or frame that tells a story.

As with all of my work I want the viewer to interact with what they are experiencing, either by movement or question, thus allowing the relationship to begin between them and the piece.

In creating Flor, the main focus was to highlight the simple beauty of the florescent bulb itself…to bring out, through careful and technical detail, the subtle nature of its form.

New York – June 26 – Phillips de Pury & Company is proud to announce an exhibition of unique light works by MarcusTremonto. Approximately sixteen pieces will be on view and for sale at Phillips de Pury & Company’s Chelsea galleries from December 7 - 31, 2007

In the contemporary spirit of welding the functionality of design and the transcendent quality of art, Marcus Tremonto has created a dazzling body of work that features chandeliers, tables and wall pieces as well as magnificent pieces in the form of table sculpture. These evocative works that manipulate and draw with light and which have been in development for the last three years will, for the first time, be showcased in a gallery setting.The cornerstone of this work is the artist-designer’s fascination with pushing the boundaries of readily available materials such as Perspex, into a precious work of art. For Marcus Tremonto, it is the development of materials that reflect the modern age and he strives to represent the future in shape.These ideas led to Tremonto winning Interior Design Magazines 2006 “Future Furniture” competition for a design utilizing rapid prototyping techniques.

MarcusTremonto has been working with a lighting material that is electroluminescent, carefully composing forms creating a process that leaves each a unique example: some which pay homage to icons of modern design and are contextualized in a wholly inventive way and others which enter a more abstract and futuristic realm.

The body of work will include pieces from the Fantasma and Stitch series.The Fantasma pieces are a group of table and hanging works formed from a hand-finished panel of Perspex that supports a glowing line - the electroluminescent material.The Stitch series expands on the potential of this material which is encased in the acrylic and has been shaped by hand to create a voluminous form. Some of these works reference the great designs of the modern era and others are more abstract and primal; in the shape of a sci-fi ray-gun cone or a sphere, all of which are referenced from pop culture and design history.

A series of tables and wall works will be produced for the show which will incorporate light-drawing and imprinting on their surfaces. The colorful and luminous presence of each of these remarkable objects creates a magical sensory experience.

Lightworks draws upon the motives to affect a space with light and render worlds for the imagination to inhabit.
